765 turns 75 & Cuyahoga Valley Visit
Last week, Nickel Plate Road 765, the preserved locomotive, turned 75 last week on Sunday, September 8th.
Nickel Plate Road 765 was built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works, according to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. She is a 2-8-4 Berkshire locomotive built for fast goods and passenger trains for the Nickel Plate Road until replaced by diesels.
Retired in 1963, 765 was donated to the city of Fort Wayne (renumbered 767, which the city asked for, because 767 was a part of a historic opening of a new overpass, but 765 was in better condition).
In 1972, after 11 years on display, 765 was put into the care of the newly formed Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
On September 1, 1979, No. 765 was restored to operation, and began a decades long excursion career in 1980, which continues to this day.
This year, 765 is not as active on the mainline as she used to be. In 2018, Amtrak, the federally run passenger company, decided to stop giving insurance to organizations, such as the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, according to Chase Gunhoe of Trains Magazine. Without this insurance, running on the mainline is not economical for many groups which used to run on the mainline.
However, this has not stopped the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society from keeping 765 busy. Coming soon this September, 765 will be operating excursions on the Cuyahoga Scenic Valley Railroad in Ohio.
Founded in 1972, the same year as the FWRHS, the Cuyahoga Scenic Valley Railroad runs excursions through the Cuyahoga Valley to "provide educational, recreational and heritage railroad experiences and to provide alternative transportation to and within Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Ohio & Erie Canalway," according to their about page.
One event the CVSR runs is "Steam in the Valley," which has happened since at least 2009, according to a Facebook post by CVSR for Throwback Thursday. 765 will operate "Steam in the Valley" trains from on the weekends of September 21-22 and 27-29.
Coinciding with "Steam in the Valley," CVSR is running a costume contest; guests are encouraged to come out in their best 40's clothes for a chance to win a $200 gift card, according to the CVSR's website. People who wish to participate should look at the CVSR's rules: www.cvsr.org/steam and use #CVSRSteam19.

CVSR are renting out two former Nickel Plate Road coaches from the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. No. 62 (built in 1934) and No. 90 (built in 1930), are Pullman heritage coaches, according to the Nickel Plate Road Historical Society's website. This has happened before in 2018, according to a Nickel Plate Road Historical Society Facebook post.
The Midwest Railway Preservation Society, founded in 1955 and operating from a former B&O Roundhouse in Cleveland, Ohio, MRPS owns over 20 pieces of railroad rolling stock. the MRPS purchased Coach No. 62 in 1960, according to the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society's Facebook page, and No. 90 in 1964 for $750 ($5,200 in today's dollars, according to the MRPS's Facebook page).
Coach No. 90 has a history with the CVSR, as she used to operate there until 1990. In 1992-1996, Coach No. 90 underwent a restoration, and she is used on the MRPS for onsite excursions. No. 90 will operate with 765 during "Steam in the Valley," then will go to the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad, according to a MRPS post on Facebook.
No. 90 is not the only piece of the MRPS' collection to run on the CVSR. Grand Trunk Western No. 4070, a 2-8-2 Mikado built in 1918, used to run excursions in the Cuyahoga Valley. She is currently under restoration by the MRPS, which is expected to cost $1,290,000.00, according to the MRPS' website.

Update: The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society announced on Twitter yesterday that one of 765's trailing truck axles was having mechanical problems. While only a minor problem, the FWRHS decided to reverse 765 back to their works to better fix the problem. This means 765 will not leave for the CVSR today, because the crew's hours would run out before they reached Belluve, Ohio.
Update 2: According to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's tracking page, 765 has been repaired and is once again on the move. You can track 765's movement here:
